Junk Removal FAQ

Everything you need to know about junk removal on Long Island and NYC — pricing, process, what we take, eco-friendly disposal, estate cleanouts, and more.

Most Asked Questions

How much does junk removal cost on Long Island?

Residential junk removal on Long Island starts at $300 for a quarter-truck load (up to 500 lbs). A half-truck is $600, three-quarters is $900, and a full truck load is $1,200. Commercial junk removal starts at $500 per quarter-load. Construction debris starts at $500 per quarter-load due to heavier materials. Pricing is based on volume and material type — you get a final quote on-site before any work begins.

What items can junk removal companies take?

Professional junk removal companies like Scrap-It! can take almost anything non-hazardous: furniture (sofas, beds, dressers, tables), appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens), electronics and e-waste, mattresses, construction debris (drywall, lumber, tile), yard waste, clothing, boxes, exercise equipment, office furniture, and general household clutter.

What items can junk removal companies NOT take?

Junk removal companies generally cannot take hazardous materials including: paint and solvents, gasoline and motor oil, pesticides and herbicides, asbestos-containing materials, propane tanks (unless empty), medical waste, radioactive materials, and contaminated soil. These require licensed hazardous waste disposal specialists.

How does junk removal pricing work?

Most junk removal companies price by volume — how much space your items take up in the truck. Pricing is typically broken into quarter-truck increments. At Scrap-It!, we give you a firm price on-site before starting, based on how full the truck will be once loaded. There are no hidden fees or charges added after the job.

Is junk removal cheaper than renting a dumpster?

For most jobs, junk removal and dumpster rental cost roughly the same. Junk removal is better when you don't want to do any work — we load it all. Dumpsters are better when you're generating debris slowly over days or weeks (like a long renovation). Junk removal also doesn't require a driveway permit or risk of driveway damage.

What happens to junk after pickup?

Scrap-It! sorts all material after pickup. Items in good condition are donated to our network of Long Island charities and nonprofits. Recyclable materials (metal, electronics, cardboard) go to certified recycling facilities. Only what genuinely can't be reused or recycled ends up in the landfill — and we actively work to minimize that.

Do junk removal companies donate usable items?

Yes — reputable junk removal companies like Scrap-It! sort loads and donate usable items to local charities, furniture banks, and nonprofits. We can provide a donation receipt for tax purposes. Items must be in clean, functional condition to qualify for donation.

Can junk removal companies remove construction debris?

Yes. Scrap-It! specializes in construction debris removal including drywall, lumber, tile, concrete, roofing materials, insulation, and more. Construction debris is priced higher than residential junk due to the heavier weight and density of materials. We do not remove hazardous materials like asbestos.

Can junk removal companies remove appliances?

Yes. Scrap-It! removes all major household and commercial appliances including refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, and water heaters. Refrigerant-containing appliances are handled by certified technicians per EPA regulations.

How do estate cleanouts work?

An estate cleanout typically starts with a walkthrough where family members or estate representatives identify items to keep. Then Scrap-It!'s crew clears everything else — furniture, appliances, personal belongings, clothing, kitchenware, and general contents. Items in good condition are donated. Recyclables are recycled. The property is left broom-clean. Most single-family home estate cleanouts take one to two days.

How do office cleanouts work?

Office cleanouts involve clearing all furniture (desks, chairs, filing cabinets, conference tables), electronics, equipment, and general contents from a commercial space. Scrap-It! can work evenings or weekends to minimize business disruption, coordinates with building management for elevator access, and handles e-waste through certified partners. Most small-to-mid-size office cleanouts are completed in a single day.

What is eco-friendly junk removal?

Eco-friendly junk removal means going beyond just hauling items to a landfill. Scrap-It! sorts every load — donating usable goods to local charities, taking recyclables to certified recycling centers, and only sending to landfill what genuinely can't be saved. Our goal is to divert as much material as possible from New York landfills on every single job.

Scheduling & Process

How do I schedule a junk removal appointment with Scrap-It!?

Call us at (631) 464-0272 or fill out the contact form on our website. We'll confirm your appointment with a two-hour arrival window. On the day of service, our crew calls 30 minutes before arriving, gives you an upfront price, and gets to work once you approve.

Do I need to sort my junk before Scrap-It! arrives?

No sorting required. Our crew handles everything. Just point us to what needs to go and we take care of the rest — sorting, loading, donating, recycling, and disposal.

How are junk removal prices calculated?

We price by volume — how much space your items take up in our truck. We assess the load on-site and give you a firm price before starting. Our pricing runs in quarter-truck increments. See our full pricing page for details.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We provide a no-obligation estimate when we arrive at your property. There's no fee to get a quote — if you don't like the price, you're not obligated to proceed.

How long does a typical junk removal appointment take?

Most residential junk removals take 1–3 hours. Estate cleanouts and large commercial jobs can take a full day or multiple days. We'll give you an honest time estimate when we arrive.

What We Take & Don't Take

Do you take old mattresses?

Yes. We remove mattresses and box springs of all sizes. Mattresses in good condition may be donated; otherwise they are taken to licensed mattress recycling facilities.

Do you take pianos?

We can remove upright pianos in some cases — call us to discuss the specifics. Grand pianos require specialized piano movers. We don't remove grand pianos.

Do you take hot tubs?

Yes, we can remove hot tubs. Hot tub removal requires disconnection from electrical service by a licensed electrician before our crew arrives. Call us to discuss logistics and pricing.

Do you take paint and chemicals from garages?

We cannot take paint, solvents, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, herbicides, or other hazardous chemicals. Contact your local municipality for household hazardous waste disposal drop-off locations.

Eco-Friendly & Donations

Can I get a receipt for donated items for tax purposes?

Yes. We provide a written record of items donated from your property. For IRS deduction purposes, you'll need to determine fair market value. The Salvation Army Donation Value Guide is a commonly used reference. Consult your tax advisor.

How does Scrap-It! reduce landfill waste?

We sort every load at our facility. Usable items go to charity partners. Recyclables go to certified recycling centers — metals, electronics, cardboard, and more. Only what genuinely can't be reused or recycled goes to landfill, and we work hard to minimize that percentage on every job.
